In June 2012, I teamed up with cinematographer Stephen Lucas and poet Carrie Chappell to create this dance for the camera. It was my first attempt at a collaborative video, which I attend to do more of!
I started with the costume that my father bought for me when I was well into my twenties. It is definitely a Halloween costume for a 10-year-old boy, but I made it work. The boots are my absolute favorite footwear that I own. Thank you, Dr. Martens! When you watch the video, you can see who they influenced the movement.
The Astronaut is also inspired by the poem The Robot of Alabama by Carrie Chappell and a scene from Stanley Kubrick's 2001 A Space Odyssey. I always wanted to be an astronaut when I was a kid, but I became a ballerina instead. Combining my love of dance and curiosity with technology has made this piece one that I am proud to present to you.
Let me know what you think! Comment and share your favorite astronaut memories with me.
