An Irish Hooley!

  • Harris Center/Three Stages at Folsom Lake College

It just wouldn't be St. Patrick's Day without honoring the great tradition and the mighty joy of being Irish. With rip-roaring music, song, and dance, Kerry Records presents An Irish Hooley with Slugger O'Toole in celebration of St. Patrick's Day. The seven musicians of Slugger O’Toole return to Folsom for a raucous, rave-up of an Irish night. Joined by members of the superb Kerry Dance Troupe, Slugger O’Toole shares their passion for the music of Ireland and the Celtic Nations by concocting a heady brew of foot-stomping pub songs, heart-rending ballads and deft instrumentals. With traditional instrumentation including fiddle, button accordion, mandolin, banjo, bodhran, pennywhistle, flute and guitars, the band thrills audiences with its brilliant close-harmony acapella renditions of the Irish classics that are true to the Celtic core. "Seeing these guys live makes me feel like I'm at a pub in the west of Ireland" (Conejo News Press).

  • The Dorothy Chandler Pavillion

Reinvention of the repertory has a long heritage in dance, and this ballet company’s critically acclaimed staging of Giselle is the production of the moment. The Royal New Zealand Ballet’s dynamic dancers bring you a “creative and glorious” revisiting of the ballet first performed in Paris in 1841. Giselle harnesses the power of forgiveness and redemption to vanquish the anguish of love and betrayal. The technically poised yet expressively convincing company fills the stage with a throng of 34 talented dancers to deliver one of the oldest living ballets in the international repertory in a lyric, pitch-perfect retelling.

National Choreographers Initiative 10th Anniversary Highlights

NCI Highlights commemorates choreographic successes originally created during NCI workshops between 2004 and 2012. In total, there have been thirty-seven NCI choreographers, who each created a new piece through this initative. Twenty-two of these original productions are now in the repertoire of companies across the country. NCI Highlights celebrates the national artistic impact of this project. Excerpts from several of these pieces will be revived by the 2013 ensemble of dancers, brought back to life on the very stage where they first debuted! NCI Highlights represents the progress and passion of the National Choreographers Initiative’s past ten seasons, and will be a celebration you will not want to miss!

The brainchild of Artistic Director Molly Lynch, NCI is a unique dance project that convenes four promising choreographers and an ensemble of sixteen professional dancers for a three-week intensive process of contemporary ballet creation.
